One trusted view of a £2.9bn R&D portfolio

The challenge

Project information lived in Dynamics 365, SharePoint lists, funder transparency data and a legacy spreadsheet, each with its own IDs. The portfolio picture was assembled by hand, couldn't be audited and was out of date as soon as it was finished.

What we did

• Audited every source and linked each project to one ID across all systems.
• Built an Azure SQL platform where every field has exactly one owner, so automated updates never overwrite people's edits.
• Flagged conflicts between sources to a data steward instead of silently picking a winner.
• Gave technology leads a governed web app with Microsoft sign-in, roles and a full audit trail.
• Added analysis dashboards and an AI assistant on top of the trusted data.

The result

From an ageing SQL Server to a modern data platform

A UK insurer

The challenge

Reporting depended on an ageing SQL Server. Analysts worked against the live database, new reports were slow to build and the platform wasn't ready for advanced analytics or AI.

What we did

• Copied data from SQL Server into Azure Data Lake automatically.
• Cleaned, validated and organised it in layers (raw, cleaned, business-ready) on Azure Databricks.
• Gave analysts business-ready tables to report from, instead of the live database.
